Dollar Store Clipboards & Pebble Go Freebie

I LOVE the dollar store - really The Dollar Tree!!  I know most teachers do too - so I just had to share my latest dollar store creations with you all!

We use our computers everyday in the classroom and I love students to be able to do research using the computers and listen to stories online during our Daily 5!  I often give them follow up worksheets or note taking sheets for them to use while on the computers.

It is hard for them to manage the keyboard and paper with our limited space and even more challenging for some of them with the larger clipboards.  So I headed to the dollar store in search of mini clipboards.  They didn't have any at the time but I found 6"x8" chalkboards and these cute colorful metal clips.

So I pulled out my trusty hot glue gun and glued the clips on the chalkboards to create my mini clipboards!!  The best best best thing about these clipboards is that they have a handy little handle for hanging them.  So while I had my glue gun fired up I hot glued some hooks to the edge of my computer tables and hung those suckers up!!  It makes me so happy to see them all hanging there all neat and tidy!

We are fortunate enough to have access to Pebble Go so I made some note taking sheets that work perfectly with my mini clipboards.

Click below to grab the freebie for yourself and there is also a larger version for you in case you don't want them to have more room to write!

Enjoy and happy dollar store shopping!!

Back to School Linky & Class Decorations

U My classroom is finally ready!  In my guided reading and small group math area, I created a fun beach theme using a palm tree that was created from an old carpet roll (Home Depot give away), brown lunch bags and an old umbrella covered with green fleece.  MeaningfulMama has a nice blog post with step by step pictures showing how to make your own tree here.  I also added a small kid sized beach umbrella and a paper lantern sun to my beach area!

Tip -  In order to stand the umbrella and palm tree I used 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot that I filled with water bottles to weigh it down.  I bought PVC pipes from HD and they cut a hole in the top of the bucket lid so the PVC pipe would fit perfectly.

Here is my new writing center!  I am really excited for this area and I am trying something new by having my writing center menu fully displayed this year.   I love having my writing center activities already set for each day of the week - it gives my student a schedule and they look forward to different days of the week and once they get into the routine they always know what to do at the writing center.  Check it out here for more details.

In my county, school starts on Monday and all across Maryland kids and teachers will all finally be back to school!  As a way to celebrate Techie Turtle Teacher, OC Beach Teacher and I have set up a Back to School linky party to gather some fantastic resources for everyone!  Please feel free to link up your back to school post, resource or freebie and make sure to visit each other's sites and leave some BTS love!!

Batty for Bats!

Batty for bats!!!  This week we are just loving these furry little mammals!  It's Halloween week and we have been spending our time reading and devouring facts about BATS!

Here are a few fun SafeShare songs that my kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

Beware, you will be sining Echo, Echo, Echolocation! After you view this cute little JumpStart song!!

After we researched and learned all sorts of fun things about Bats we started practicing sorting facts from opinions!  We practiced this all last week with our spider research so it was a fun way to continue practicing.  My kiddos did an amazing job of taking their opinions and supporting them with facts!

In math we are working on surveys and bar graphs, so of course we had to take a survey about bats!

Do you think bats are cool or spooky?  COOL won by a landslide!
The bats they created turned out super cute and are hanging all around our classroom making everything look very spooky and decorative for Halloween!  This cute little bat even made his way into my guided reading tree!

Check out my brand new Batty for Bats Opinion Writing Unit!  It comes with everything you need to take all your bat research to the next level!

As always, thanks for stopping by!  Happy Halloween everyone!!

Happy Spring - Happy Earth Day!

It's finally spring, although yesterday we had some snow here and today it is only in the mid 40's!  Yikes!  Well, regardless of our weather we are excited about this year's upcoming Earth Day holiday!

There are so many fun things that you can do to celebrate earth day!  This year we began by spending time learning all about taking care of earth!  Some years we actually go and visit the local recycling center but this year with all our snow days, it did not work out for use to go but if you have one near your school you should consider going there as a field trip.  It’s pretty cheap (just the cost of buses) and the kids LOVE it!!

After we read some wonderful mentor texts like The Great Kapok Tree, and Just a Dream, we read a wonderful non-fiction texts called Heroes of the Environment: True Stories of People Who Are Helping to Protect Our Planet by Harriet Rohmer.

Then kids were ready to write an opinion piece about why we should take care of earth!  I love reading their opinions after all our research!

They did a great job!  If you are interested in doing this project, check out my earth opinion/informational writing unit in my TPT store.  It has a graphic organizer, final draft, craft and a few fun earth day word work activities.

I also loved having my kiddos write an earth day poem!  Check out this fun freebie by Lisa Lilienthal

Writing centers that work like a charm!!

How do you manage writing centers?  When I first moved from 2nd grade to 1st grade I realized that what I did in 2nd grade was not going to work for my cute little 1st graders!  Of course I turned to my more experienced teammates and pinterest for inspiration.  I loved all the writing center menus that I saw online but when I tried those it was too many choices for my students and then spent their time choosing or fooling around and making mulitple choices per center rotation.  That is when I decided to dedicate a different writing activity to each day of the week so that they would have variety and consistency!  I bought a set of plastic in boxes and labeled them with the days of the week and put the materials in each day.  It has worked like a charm ever since.  Check out my Daily Writing Center Menus in my TPT store and feel free to download the preview for a closer look!

Here is the order for our daily writing centers:

Monday

Write a friendly letter!  I have a selection of writing papers that they can choose from and they get to pick anyone from our class to writing their friendly letter to.  At the begining of the year, I ask them to make sure their letters have a greeting, closing and at least 3 sentences.

Tuesday

Make a book!  Sometimes I use books from Enchanted Learning or DLTK!  My kiddos also like to create their own books using construction paper and lined papers.

Wednesday

Write and create!  This is my one of my favorite days because I get to use different pieces of artwork or cool photographs  to inspire my kiddos.  I use the See, Think, Wonder strategy to have them use critical thinking skills to analyize the artwork.  They have to write one thing they See, one thing they are Thinking about when they look at the picture, and one thing they Wonder about after looking at the picture.  There are so many cool resources and ways to differentiate this on the

Thursday

Think and Thank Thursday!  This is my favorite out of the whole week!! My principal actually started this awesome tradition in our school.  Every Thursday morning during announcements he reminds the students that it is "Think and Thank Thursday", he charges them with finding someone to thank that day and to think about how that person has helped them in some way.  So during writing centers that day my kiddos make a Thank You card using construction paper.  They glue a precut piece of lined paper on the inside right panel of the card and write a thank you note to someone in our building.  I have a list of people who work in our building and used pictures from our website so that they can pick someone new each week.  They decorate the front of the card when they finish the writing and then I deliver the cards after school that day.  Everyone loves Think and Thank Thursday!!  Thanks Mr. Kaplan for the GREAT idea and motivation!

Friday

Free writing!  On Friday I have different types of lined paper that they can choose from to just free write about anything they want.  Sometimes the paper has space above the lines to make a picture of their writing and sometimes I mix it up and give them decorated papers to just practice writing.

That's the whole week!  I have the menus hanging on a bulletin board where my writing center table and supplies are.  I put each page and anchor chart in a top loading sheet and then put them into a an old binder that I cut up and stapled to the board.  At the end of each day, I just flip the page to show the next day of the week and I am ready to go!

My classes have loved doing their daily writing activities and they look forward to their favorite days of the week too.  It's cool to hear a student tell another student, "Oh, I love Think and Thank Thursday!"

I hope you will share some of your writing center ideas because I am always looking for ways to keep my writing center engaging and fresh!

Made It Monday - Chalkboard & Writing Center Makeovers

Since summer is almost over, I have been working on school projects like crazy!  I am happy to be linking up once again with Tara over at Fourth Grade Frolics!

I really wanted to revamp my word wall this year but couldn't decide how to do it because the only space that I have large enough for it is my yucky old chalkboard.  At first I started by covering it with paper but then my words did not magnet through the paper, so that was a bust!  Then I had an idea to paint it.  I used tempera paint and tested a small area to make sure my magnets would still stick and they did!  I poured the paint into a paint pan and used a roller to paint it on the board.  It was just as easy as painting a wall and I think it turned out so bright and clean.  I added some boarder and these cute letter signs by Amanda D and now I love it!

I was so excited about my chalkboard makeover that I decided to move on to my writing center.  I love this center and plan to use the same Daily Writing Center Menus that I used last year because they worked so perfectly.  Students always knew what to do when they came to the writing center and I didn't have to constantly change the materials but I wanted to give the bulletin board and baskets a makeover.  I found this super cute zebra border at the teacher store and grabbed the glue gun, my zebra ribbon and got to work!  I LOVE how it turned out and so excited to have my cuties come to this center and work on their writing.

My last project for this edition of Made it Monday was to make a new sign for my class library.  I found these cute cardboard alphabet letters, covered them with scrapbook paper and decoupaged them!  So easy and so cute!

I loved them so much that I made another sign using the cardboard that the letters were cut out of.  I painted to cardboard red and put scrapbook paper behind the cardboard.  I hung this sign up next to my guided reading table.

Thanks for stopping by, I can't wait to go see all the other Made It Monday links this week.

Last week of school = Camping and S'mores!

The last week of school is always crazy for me and the kids.  The weather is beautiful, the pools are open and keeping the kids focused can be a challenge.  This year my team planned a camp like activity for the last week of school.  We each planned an activity to do with a class and then created a schedule that rotated each class through to each teacher.  It was super fun.  In my rotation we used water colors to create murals, they worked in 4 teams per rotation created awesome murals!  After murals dried each teacher got 4 big murals that we used to help us cover empty bulletin boards which made our classrooms look bright and cheery instead of packed up!

The other roations included Father's Day pet rock creations, volcano experiements, and stain "glass" creations

On the last full day of school we had kids bring in flashlights and we had a big camp out.  I had three tents set up in my classroom and kids created their own campfires using toilet paper tubes and construction paper.
I found an awesome youtube video of a camp fire that I had playing on the board while they worked.  When they were finished we turned out the lights and they used thier flashlights to read by the campfires.

After they read we talked about smores!  They shared their experiences with making and eating smores and then I told then that we were going to make smores in our classroom.  They were beyond excited.  We watched a video on making smores in the microwave.  It is a great little youtube video that was perfect for my kids to watch and they write about making smores.

After we made and ate our smores, the kids wrote the steps to making smores.  It was a perfect conclusion to all our camping fun!  I found this wonderful smores writing paper and some fun camping ideas at Rulin' the Roost!  Be sure the check them out!

Happy Summer to all my awesome teacher friends!!
